With Sidecar, you can use an iPad display for tablet input to draw, sketch or write with Apple Pencil in any Apple or third-party Mac app that supports stylus input. Sidecar runs on a wired connection so users can charge their iPad as they work, or on a wireless connection for greater mobility, using everything from illustration apps and video editing apps to 3D apps, like Photoshop, Illustrator and ZBrush.

macOS Catalina introduces transformative accessibility features to enable users with disabilities to get the most out of their devices. Voice Control is a whole new way for users to control Mac and iOS devices entirely with their voice. It uses the latest version of Siri speech recognition technology to transcribe spoken text and enable editing text via voice. New numbers and grids provide the tools to interact with virtually any app, and audio processing happens entirely on device. Security and Privacy: More User Control Than Ever
Security improvements in Catalina better protect macOS from tampering, help ensure apps are safe, and give users greater control over access to their data. macOS Catalina now runs on a dedicated, read-only system volume, which means it is completely separate from all other data, and nothing can accidentally overwrite critical operating system files. Gatekeeper, Apple’s technology to ensure only trusted software runs on a Mac, now checks all apps for known security issues, while new data protections require all apps to get permission before accessing user documents. Every Mac with the Apple-designed T2 Security Chip now supports Activation Lock, just like on iPhone or iPad, so if a Mac is ever misplaced or stolen, only the owner can erase and reactivate it. Approve with Apple Watch also lets users approve specific security prompts by simply tapping the side button on their Apple Watch.

macOS Catalina (10.15)
Apple released Catalina in October 2019.
If you use highly specialized academic software or have installed unique personal software, please verify with the vendor that it will be compatible with Catalina before upgrading, or contact LTS for assistance with this.
If you are running macOS 10.11 or older, please contact LTS for assistance before upgrading.
Before any upgrade, as always, we strongly recommend that you perform a backup of all your data.
Software incompatibility:
Banner ERP and NolijWeb. Safari is not compatible with the Java applet required for Banner ERP and NolijWeb.
Code 42 requires you to grant access: follow these instructions to update your privacy settings and ensure files and folders from locations like the Desktop, Contacts, Photos, Documents and Downloads continue to back up.
Microsoft Office 2011. Office 2016 and Office 365 16.17 or later are compatible. We encourage you to request an upgrade to Microsoft Office 2016.

SCEP Anti-VirusSCEP is a 32-bit app which does run on macOS 10.14 and earlier. We are in the process of deciding which vendor/product we will use for our faculty/staff machines moving forward. We plan to release our faculty/staff Catalina image in January.
Users must also enable the AnyConnect software extension in their macOS Preferences Security & Privacy pane.
New with Catalina:
Only 64-bit apps will be supported. If you run 32-bit apps, please check if the vendor has a 64-bit version available for download or contact the Help Desk.

Data protections: macOS Catalina checks with you before allowing an app to access your data in your Documents, Desktop, and Downloads folders; iCloud Drive; the folders of third-party cloud storage providers; removable media; and external volumes. In addition, you’re asked before an app can perform key logging or capture a still or video recording of your screen.
Other features
Restore from snapshot: If your third-party software is incompatible with an update you just installed, use macOS Recovery to restore from a snapshot of your computer taken right before the installation. macOS and all your apps will work just as they did before you installed the update.
Sidecar Extended desktop: Use your iPad as a second display for additional screen space. Refer to one app while you work in another, or see how a presentation looks in presentation mode on your iPad while editing it on your Mac.
